Rules & Regulations
The Basis
School Rules
- are based on the
- recognition that the School is a place for learning
- respect for the right of every individual to learn, grow and develop themselves in a conducive environment.
- are made for the benefit and development of each and everyone in Unity Secondary School.
- All students must stand at attention with both feet together and hands by the side when the National Anthem is being played. Students who are Singapore citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Students are to take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart.
- Students must be at their best behaviour both in and out of school. They must show respect and be courteous to the Principal, Vice-Principal, teachers, staff members, vendors and all visitors to the school through important but simple gestures like greeting them and being polite.
- Students must remain in their class at all times. Permission to leave class can be given at the discretion of teachers and permit pass must be displayed prominently on the shirt.
- Students are not allowed to visit the cafeteria during lessons. Students having PE lessons are only allowed to visit the water-coolers under the supervision of the PE teacher.
- Students must queue up for food, drinks and all other services. All utensils and cutlery after use are to be placed into the bins for the respective stalls.
- Students must consume food and drinks in the canteen only. Students may only consume plain water in class and other areas of the school.
- Students are not to bring in to the school or be seen communicating with undesirable characters/outsiders.
- Students who are absent from school must inform their parents to call up the school to inform the General Office.
- Absence from school or other school activities must be covered by:
- A medical certificate (MC) or
- Letter of excuse from the parent/guardian. The school may seek clarification from parents/guardians.
- Students must submit MCs or letters of excuse from parents without demand when they return.
- Students will be considered to have been truanting and disciplinary action will be taken if no documents are submitted within 3 days of their return from absence.
- Students who do not achieve 75 % attendance at school may be ineligible to take the school’s promotional examinations.
- Students are to assemble at the Parade Square on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays by 0725hrs. On Tuesdays, students are to assemble at the Parade Square by 0825 hrs.
- Students who arrive after 0745hrs must:
- Proceed to the General Office to obtain a late-coming reporting slip. Office staff will record student’s particulars and time before he/she is allowed to join his class.
- Show the reporting slip to the form teacher/subject teacher for permission to join the class.
- Students who are persistently late even after repeated warnings will be liable to have disciplinary action taken against them.
- Any student who wishes to leave the school premises during school hours must seek permission from the form teacher. The procedure is:
- The student informs his subject teacher / form teacher that he is leaving the school.
- The teacher records the time of departure on the early dismissal form.
- The office staff informs his parents to fetch him/her from school.
- The office/teaching staff endorses on the standard form and hands it to the respective form teacher.
- A student who is sick is to rest in the sick bay. He/She should:
- Seek permission from the subject teacher to go to the sick bay to rest.
- Record his name in the sick bay Reporting Book.
- No student is to be in the sick bay for more than one period without the form teacher’s/subject teacher’s approval.
- A parent/guardian who wishes to see his/her child/ward must first report to the General Office. No visitor is allowed to see a student without prior permission from the office.
- Students must be clean and tidy. They must maintain a high standard of personal hygiene at all times.
- School uniform guidelines:
- Students are to wear the prescribed school uniform and no modification is allowed.
- Students having PE lessons before recess are allowed to wear their PE attire to school. However, they must change into their full school uniform during recess. If PE lessons are held after recess, students are to wear their full school uniform to school. They are only allowed to change into their PE attire during recess.
- Skirts must be knee-length and not too tight.
- School collar badge must be worn at all times.
- Track shoes with four colours (navy blue, white, black and grey) are allowed. Only white canvas shoes may be worn.
- Only white socks without logos are allowed.
- Socks must be at least ankle length.
- Slippers are not to be worn at any time in the school premises. Students with a medical condition must request permission to wear such footwear.
- Fingernails should be kept clean, short and unvarnished
- No ear rings, chokers, neck/wrist chains, fancy watch straps and other forms of jewellery are allowed. Girls are allowed to wear only one small round stud on each ear lobe. Fanciful earnings are not allowed.
- No make-up, tattoo or any form of body art is allowed.
- During cold/rainy weather, only plain and simple sweaters/windbreakers are allowed.
- Students must have hair of natural colour and are not allowed to dye or highlight their hair. Students found with dyed or highlighted hair will not be allowed to attend lessons and participate in school activities. Parents/guardians will be asked to take them home to re-dye their hair.
- Boys must keep their hair short and neatly combed.
- Hair at the front must at all times be above both eyebrows. When combed downwards, it should not cover the eyes.
- Hair at the back must be sloped and should not touch the collar. Slope should not be stepped or undercut.
- Hair at the sides must not touch the ears.
- No outlandish or fancy hairstyles are allowed.
- No long sideburns are allowed.
- All boys should be clean shaven and not keep facial hair.
- Boys are not allowed to wear any forms of ear studs.
- Girls’ fringes should be above the eyebrows.
- Girls must tie up their hair.
- Only black, dark green or maroon hair clips and hair-bands with simple designs are allowed.
- No outlandish hairstyles are allowed.
- Students are not allowed to use mobile phones, MP3 players, radios or electronic gaming devices in the classroom, academic blocks, during curriculum time or CCA sessions. If students are found using or attempt to use these items, such item(s) will be confiscated by teacher/DM for a period of at least one month and returned to the owner as follows:
- 1st offence: The item will be confiscated for 1 month and it will be collected by student or parent
- 2nd offence: The item will be confiscated till the end of the year and it will be collected by parent/guardian only
- 3rd offence: The item will be kept until such time as student completes his/her secondary education
- Dangerous weapons, controlled/abused drugs, chewing gums, cigarettes or lighters found on any student, concealed or otherwise will be confiscated permanently and students will have to face disciplinary consequences.
- Combs with sharp handles are deemed as dangerous and are not allowed.

School property should be handled with care. There must be no misuse or act of vandalism of school property. Students should report any damaged property to the Operations Manager immediately.
- Return all furniture, equipment or instruments to their respective places/classrooms after use.
- The Staff Room, Staff Lounge, Staff Toilets, and Special Rooms such as the science and computer labs, cookery rooms, and technical workshops are out of bounds to all students without the presence of a teacher/school staff.
- No student is allowed to stay in the classroom during recess or when there is no lesson in the room unless permission is granted by teachers.
- Punishments, including caning and/or suspension from school, will be meted out on a case-by-case basis for major offences.
- Students who committed major offences will not be allowed to represent Unity Secondary for any events. They will not be eligible for any awards, incentives and/ or go on overseas trips.
